The Marine Technician (MT) employment requires them to be adept at operating, monitoring and maintaining equipment in a wide and diverse range of platforms both in a seagoing and shore-based environment. As part of their maintenance function, they are required to conduct periodic, routine planned maintenance, attend to breakdown maintenance, and assist contractors in higher level maintenance. The MT sailor is responsible for the operation and maintenance of various machinery and associated systems throughout the ship, including:
The MT trainee has a recruit training phase of 11 weeks at HMAS Cerberus, Crib Point Victoria. Following successful completion of recruits, MT Trainees commence their 34 weeks (normally less for qualified entrants) of Initial Employment Training (IET) also carried out at HMAS Cerberus. On successful completion of IET, qualified MTs are posted either to a fleet unit or shore establishment. These postings occur on a rotational period throughout the period of service. Once an MT sailor achieves competence through on-the-job experience and completion of competency elements, they are required to undertake maintenance activities under limited supervision. |
