To be eligible to apply for this position you must:

  • have passes in YR10 Math, Science and English
  • be aged between 17 and 53
  • be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident (who has applied for Australian Citizenship and can provide proof)

  • be medically and physically fit

The Avionics Technician is a soldier who inspects, repairs and maintains aircraft communication, navigation, radar, electrical, electronics and instrument systems and selected ground equipment. The main job functions are as follows:

  • Carry out scheduled and unscheduled servicing, overhauls and repairs to aircraft electrical instruments and electronic systems and equipment;
  • Operate and maintain test equipment and special tooling associated with the trade;
  • Operate and maintain workshop plant, equipment and vehicles;
  • Act as crew members during flight testing to diagnose faults;
  • Identify and investigate defects and recommend remedial action in the areas covered by the trade;
  • Maintain technical manuals and maintenance documentation for aircraft and related equipment.

The Avionics Technician trainee has a recruit training phase of 80 days at Kapooka Army Barracks, Wagga Wagga, NSW. Following successful completion of recruits, Avionics Technician Trainees move to RAAF Base Wagga, NSW to commence their 64 weeks of Initial Employment Training (IET). On successful completion of IET, Avionics Technicians are posted to the Aviation Support Group Workshop, Oakey QLD to commence 12 month On the Job Training (OJT). Once an Avionics Technician achieves competence through OJT and completion of competency elements, they are required to undertake maintenance activities under limited supervision.
