To be eligible to apply for this position you must:

  • have passes in YR10 Math, Science and English
  • be aged between 17 and 53
  • be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident (eligible to become an Aust Citizen)
  • be medically and physically fit

The Aviation Technician - Avionics (ATV) sailor is responsible for the maintenance and repair of aircraft (mainly helicopter) systems and components, such as:

  • aircraft electrical systems, DC/AC power operation and distribution;
  • anti submarine systems (ASW), flight director systems;
  • flight instruments, systems integration, navigational systems;
  • ground support equipment, radar/sonar/ Doppler systems;
  • automatic flight control systems, communication systems;
  • environmental systems, air weapon systems;
  • aircraft weapons/armament;
  • aviation safety equipment; and
  • aviation survival equipment.

The ATV trainee has a recruit training phase of 11 weeks at HMAS Cerberus, Crib Point Victoria. Following successful completion of recruits, ATV Trainees move to RAAF Base Wagga, NSW to commence their 72 weeks of Initial Employment Training (IET). On successful completion of IET, qualified ATVs are posted to HMAS Albatross, Nowra NSW to commence work on the Navy Helicopter Fleet. Once an ATV sailor achieves competence through On the Job Training (OJT) and completion of competency elements, they are required to undertake maintenance activities under limited supervision.
