The Electronics Technician (ET) specialises in electronic componentary, systems operation and maintenance. This requires them to be adept at operating, monitoring and maintaining equipment in a wide and diverse range of platforms both in a seagoing and shore-based environment. The ET sailor is responsible for the operation and maintenance of various machinery and associated systems through out the ship including:

  • RADAR systems and Displays;
  • Navigation Aids (gyro-compasses, Inertial Navigation systems);
  • Weapons systems (Guns, Missile systems);
  • Fire Control Systems;
  • Satellite equipment (GPS, SATCOM);
  • Communications systems (HF, VHF, UHF);
  • Electronic Warfare systems; and
  • Underwater systems (SONAR, Echo Sounders, Torpedo Countermeasures). 

The ET trainee has a recruit training phase of 11 weeks at HMAS Cerberus, Crib Point Victoria. Following successful completion of recruits, ET Trainees commence their 38 weeks (normally less for qualified entrants) of Initial Employment Training (IET) also carried out at HMAS Cerberus. On successful completion of IET, qualified ETs are posted either to a fleet unit or shore establishment. These postings occur on a rotational period throughout the period of service. Once an ET sailor achieves competence through on-the-job experience and completion of competency elements, they are required to undertake maintenance activities under limited supervision.
