Telecommunications Systems employment category installs, configures, operates, maintains, diagnoses faults, repairs telecommunications, information and cabling systems in support of commanders and their staff. At a senior level they use their extensive training, experience and analytical skills to plan, design, implement, manage and maintain quality control of complex communications and information systems. The Telecommunications Systems Technician soldier is a member of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals (RA Sigs). The role of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals is to provide communications, information systems and electronic warfare (CISEW) support to the Army and the Australian Defence Force to allow command and control of deployed forces in peace, crisis and conflict on any operation anywhere in the world. On the battlefield, RA Sigs provides commanders with the means of controlling the battle using a number of methods including radio, fibre optic, microwave, information systems and satellite links. By planning, deploying and maintaining robust, scalable, secure local and wide area networks, RA Sigs ensures the Army's information services are available 24/7 anywhere in the world. The Telecommunications Systems trainee has a recruit training phase of 80 days at Kapooka Army Barracks, Wagga Wagga NSW. Following successful completion of recruits, Telecommunications Systems trainees commence 72 weeks of Initial Employment Training (IET), conducted at the Defence Force School of Signals (DFSS), Simpson Barracks, Macleod, VIC. It should be noted that there might be periods of time between courses conducted at DFSS. Should this occur, soldiers will be provided with both meaningful employment and refresher training. Training incorporates all aspects of the telecommunications communications equipment used in RA Sigs Units. Subjects include telecommunications cabling, satellite theory and equipment stations, circuit switch networks, telephone systems and local and wide area computer networks. Posting locations for Telecommunications Systems Technicians range from the RA Sigs tactical and strategic units located throughout Australia. The major RA Sigs concentrations are in Melbourne, Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney. |
