To be eligible to apply for this position you must:
  • have passes in YR10 Math, Science and English
  • be aged between 17 and 53
  • be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident (who has applied for Australian Citizenship and can provide proof)

  • be medically and physically fit
  • be the holder of a current unrestricted Australian (Class 1 or equivalent) Drivers Licence and if provisional, be a holder of a Provisional Licence with a minimum of twelve months driving experience against the provisional licence held and make a statutory declaration that there is no action pending against that driving licence

Motor Mechanics (formerly Ground Support Equipment Fitters (GSEFITT)) are responsible for the ongoing maintenance, repair and modification of:

  • motor transport vehicles,
  • Ground Support Equipment (GSE),
  • aircraft arrestor systems and
  • fuel farm installation fuel quality control.

Post graduate training is available on a number of specialist systems including auto and industrial air-conditioning systems, as well as specialist maintenance training on Aircraft Arrester Systems and Fuel Quality Control. After gaining some experience in the GSE world, interested tradesmen can apply for automotive electrical training (technician level). GSE Technicians are responsible for the maintenance of ground support equipment electrical systems, ground radar mechanical installations and refrigeration/air-conditioning systems.

The trainee has a recruit training phase of 10 weeks and 4 days at RAAF Base Wagga, NSW. Following successful completion of recruits, trainees move to the Army Logistic Training Centre (ALTC) located at Bonegilla (Wodonga) to complete the Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Course (Up to 60 weeks). After graduating from ALTC you will be posted to an Air Force Unit.
