The trades are broken into Apprenticeships/Traineeships and Qualified positions:

Apprenticeships/Traineeships - Defence Apprenticeships/Traineeships are different from civilian apprenticeships/traineeships in that all theory training (called Initial Employment Training or IET) is done up front. You will then be posted to your employment location where you will complete your on the job trade training performing real maintenance tasks on Defence equipment. On the completion of your trade qualification you will receive your Certificate 3 in your respective trade.

Qualified - Defence qualified positions require you to have completed the relevant Certificate 3 as Defence will usually only supply military (recruit) and basic conversion training for these positions.
